Bookstore Sounding Board
Is it possible to find out what textbooks are being used by someone who is not a student? I am not able to attend college right now, but thought getting some textbook recommendations in areas I'm interested in would be a good way to pursue some education on my own. I found the link to view textbooks but don't have a Net ID/Password. Thank you.
A Net ID/Paword is necessary to get a custom book list matched exactly to a registered student’s current class list. But if you want to view titles, go to our website http://www.byubookstore.com/ePOS?this_category=754&store=439&form=shared3%2fgm%2fmain%2ehtml&design=439), which can be accessed from our web page www.byubookstore.com. You can then drill down, look at the book list, and then even place orders for specific titles if you wish. One caution: we have some upgrades in the works that may change everything about the way we present the book list to our students and customers, but right now these directions are valid.(Posted 2/27/2009)
I am curious to know the textbooks BYU uses for a few courses. I am a graduate of BYU but I am not now a student. Why do I need a secure log in to simply view what books you carry for the various courses offered on campus?
You don’t. A secure log-in is necessary to get a custom book list matched exactly to a registered student’s current class list. Hello! Could you, please, give me an information of a textbook for Math 097. Thanks!
It depends on whether you are taking Math 097 on campus or through Independent Study. The BYU Bookstore has not been asked to provide anything for Math 097 in several years, and we’re not sure what the department is doing for this class. There is, however, a textbook used in the Independent Study version of Math 097, and we do sell that. You can find it by going to www.byubookstore.com and link to the booklist for Independent Study from there.(Posted 2/27/2009)
Why have you taken so long to get Book Exchange back up and running. How convenient for the Book Store to have Book Exchange down right when students are in need of selling and buying their text books! It has been down for days which seems inexcusable to me. What's the deal?
Here’s the deal in a nutshell. At exactly the worst time of the semester, a firewall problem caused the server to be unavailable, and in the process of trouble shooting that headache, our Web student made an irrevocable change to the server configuration. The only alternative at that point was to rebuild the server and move all of the applications onto the new platform. Ever heard that things always take longer than you think they will? It is true. The only silver lining in this massive cloud is that in fixing the problem, we have taken measures to ensure that if we ever experience a similar situation we should be able to restore the application in a matter of hours instead of days. We apologize sincerely for the enormous inconvenience caused by this mess.(Posted 2/27/2009)
Why is it that the book exchange was available for use until it was actually needed? Books that I wanted to sell on the exchange weren't sold because the site was down. Was that just a convenient black-out for the book store or was it planned?
You can’t plan something that miserable. First, you would have to choose the worst time of the semester to eliminate the book exchange. Second, you would have to locate the firewall that could shut down the whole server. Third, during the attempt to trouble shoot the firewall problem, you would have to factor in human error that could make an irrevocable change to the server configuration. Fourth, you would now have no alternative but to rebuild the entire server. Fifth, you would finally have to move all of the applications to the new platform. The one positive note is that in taking forever to solve the problem, we have taken measures to ensure that if this ever happens again, we will be able to restore the application in a matter of hours instead of days. We are truly sorry and apologize for the massive inconvenience caused by the perfect blunder.(Posted 2/27/2009)
