Richard asked:

Any more 20 per cent sales before Christmas or big promotions to entice me to but presents at the bookstore instead of other places? I wish you had Einstein bagels as they taste ALOT better and small bags of potato chips--regular flavor. Thanks for free gift wrapping!

Response:

OVERVIEW OF SALES AT BYU BOOKSTORE

20% sales: second Tuesday in November from 5-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, two weeks before Christmas, and the week of April graduation. We also have big back-to-school sales at the beginning of every semester and feature special items almost every Saturday during the year—and occasionally at other times, too.

THE BAGEL DILEMMA

We used to have Einstein bagels but were forced to switch when a) they increased prices significantly, and b) gave us a new minimum order which was beyond our ability to meet.

THE POTATO CHIP PROBLEM

Our contract with Frito Lay says that the driver, who also stocks the shelves, chooses the merchandise. We don’t always see him when he comes, but the next time our eyeballs meet, we will ask him to include some small bags of regular flavor potato chips. It will be up to him to remember to include those when he loads the truck and to actually get them in the store, but we’ll do out best begging.

FREE GIFT WRAP

You’re welcome.

all1line asked:

I remember a series of math/algebra etc. tutor set of videos available in the math lab some years ago. I am guessing that a similar set might now be available on DVD video or in mp4 format for iPod? Please let me know the possibilities at your earliest convenience? I am an international BYU alumni without the option to browse through your textbooks on a frequent basis. Why limit access to course textbooks listings to your currently enrolled students? Past students may benefit from this information as well as it might help you sell more books. Sincerely all1line

Response:

Part 1. The Bookstore does not have math tutor sets of any kind. We called the math lab and learned that some are available when you are taking a course. Algebra help, for instance, accompanies the textbook COLLEGE ALGEBRA by Sullivan, 7th edition, Pearson/Prentice Hall. The local book rep for this text is Heidi, 801-231-0144. Using Google, we typed in “algebra tutorial” and found a number of interesting products.

Part 2. Current students have online access only to those books that match up with their classes. No one except bookstore employees can bring up the 4000+ textbook titles. We do have a printed list of about 200 pages that lists all the titles we stock each semester, but it sound like you are far away and might be unable to come in and browse through it. If you have questions, we will be happy to work with you. For instance, if you would like to know the current texts used in organic chemistry classes, we can help. The more specific your questions, the better job we can do.

kawika asked:

how come you don't show isbn numbers in the booklocker section? it would be _most_ helpful.

Response:

We’ve actually thought about doing this, but with the ISBN available on shelf tags, on a printout at the information desk, on Amazon.com, and at number of other places on the internet, it is easily accessible to students who need it.

Brandon asked:

Why don't you list ISBN numbers on the online book lists. I was trying to compare prices on my required books with what they have online and couldn't narrow my search enough without the ISBN numbers. If you could add that, it'd be great.

Dawn asked:

I was wondering if there would be a way to post pictures of the textbooks required for a class next to the title or price of the book. At my community college back home they did this on our booklists for the majority of the books and it really helped out in trying to find the books we needed. Since I had somewhat of a difficult time finding my books and some were mixed into the wrong sections, I think it would cut down on time people spent trying to find the right book.

Response:

Because of your question, we have talked about posting pictures of the textbooks on or near the shelf tags. This would be an admittedly nice addition, but for the moment we have decided not to do it. The reasons are that students often don’t know what the cover looks like and that enough information is already provided to verify that the student is buying the correct textbook. With author, title, publisher, edition, and ISBN, there should be no mistake in picking the proper book. This is not to say that we won’t change our minds in the future, but for now we are not going to the time or expense of providing a photo of the book.
