Michael Walter asked:

Does BYU require the written portion of the ACT? My son is a junior in high school, will turn 19 at the end of his senior year, and plans to serve an LDS mission immediately thereafter. May he, should he apply for admission before Feb of his senior year, or must he await his two-year mission first?

Response:

Due to the unpredictability of microchips, your question ended up at the BYU Bookstore. But we called admissions and a polite and knowledgeable Kenna told us without hesitation (always a good sign) that the written portion of the ACT is not required at BYU. Anything else we can do for you?

Skyler Williams asked:

When you post the books that are needed can you please include the edition that is needed? Many professors change the edition of book that will be used and many purchase their books online without knowing the edition.

Response:

The correct edition is noted on the shelf tag and the print-out available at the Textbook Information Desk about 6-8 weeks before the beginning of the semester. It is also on the electronic list available through Route Y but in a truncated form. For instance, Organic Chemistry 5e. The "5e" means 5th Edition.

Tyler Sheffield asked:

Why are there no questions yet? -Tyler Sheffield

Response:

We were waiting for yours so we could begin the 2007 Bookstore Question-and-Answer Extravaganza. Thank you for starting us off right!

Anonymous asked:

I was just wondering why BYU offers a chance to win $100 every day by just swiping their ID card. Isn't that kind of like gambling? Has anyone ever tried to swipe their card by buying 100 items that are only $.25 to win the prize?

Response:

If you think the $100 is gambling, we recommend you turn the other way and walk as fast as you can. If you spend some time figuring out how to beat the maybe-gambling system, though, then we encourage you to join the prize-seeking throngs.

Landon Ipson asked:

I visited the bookstore about a month ago and found the cards were all updated for the courses for Winter Semester. I could have bought my books then. However, this same information is not available online in My Book List until 1 week before school starts. Why is it not posted ahead of time? I appreciate the information that is provided, but it seems to be posted a little late. Plus, why are the ISBN's not posted on My Book List? It just seems like an attempt to dissuade people from buying books elsewhere.

Response:

You may not like this response, but here is the straight skinny.

There are two reasons why the electronic list is not available earlier.

1. The final list is not entirely dependable until then. You would be surprised at the number of late changes because of shifting teaching assignments and faculty deciding to make text changes, like dropping a title previously ordered.

2. There is considerable time and expense in producing a clean, final list, which is much different from merely collecting information from faculty (details available on request). We deal in almost 16,000 titles annually, and we have to walk a fine line between being a financially responsibly entity (the university who owns us expects us to cover our expenses plus return a profit to the university) and serving the student. If, for instance, we have tons of overstock we have to ship back or if we have bought used books we can't sell, prices have to go up. On the other hand, if we don't have enough stock, we aren't serving the student who depends on us.

In short, we don't make the list available where potential competition could use it, but we do provide the information so interested students can find the books they will need--including the ISBN.

Why don't we add the ISBN to the electronic list? This is the part you may like least. There is only one reason students want to download the ISBN, and that is to do quick shopping with a search engine. We do not feel a need to supply them for that purpose (see #2 above). They are not a secret, however. If you want them, they are available.
