I'm trying to sell a book on the book exchange. Even though my book is listed fairly cheap--there are many 'International Editions' for sale on the site. I remember reading in the policies of the book exchange site that it was against copyright law to sell the international editions here and that doing so would be reported to the Honor Code office. That's great--but I really don't care if they get reported to the honor code office. I just don't want buyers to be distracted by all of the low-priced international editions and give my book a chance.

Response:

Anonymous, you have a good point—plus a good heart in not wanting to bust the sellers of international editions. At the moment we don’t have a good answer for you because we have no way to sort out the offenders. What we’re contemplating doing is adding a “report item” button next to each book listed. This way if students see an item that appears questionable, they can click the button and we will get an email notifying us of item that needs a closer look. Then, if it shouldn’t be there, we can manually delete the listing. This will not happen right away, however, but will be an enhancement added to “Book Exchange 2.”

Eric asked:

I am trying to post a book on book exchange but when I push submit it says that I must first agree to the liability statement. However, the page seems to be a little bit out of wack. The liability statement has mostly been covered up by another part of the page making it impossible to agree to it. What should I do?

Stephanie asked:

I am trying to reserve a copy of the 09-10 academic year planner. I was directed to the bookstore website to search for "planner" but that isn't bringing up anything relevant (just wedding planners, etc). How do I reserve a copy if it can't be done on-line?

Response:

Congratulations! You passed the test wedding planners test without complaining. We will now give you the information you seek. The calendars currently can be preordered and are expected to be available July 1. The calendar link to the BYU Bookstore website is: http://www.byubookstore.com/ePOS/form=item.html&item=2098142&store=439 If you have any further trouble, please let us know. We will respond without making you pass another test.

Tyrone Billingsley asked:

http://outskirtspress.com/thebloodinthevirus There is a new book out that tells about the origination of a Chicago Street gang called the "Black 10-3 Renegade Gangster Disciples of north Roseland; it's borders are as follows: 107th on the south, 99th/Interstate57 on the north, State Street on the ease, and the train tracks on the west. Is this valuable to the Illinois schools and Chicago neighborhoods? Please advise. Thank you.

Response:

Valuable? Depends. If you want to learn about the approximately 250 known gangs and crews in Chicago, you’re going to find sketchy information on only about 75—gang name, ethnicity, symbols, colors, saying, membership numbers and locations. The Black 10-3 Renegade Gangster Disciples have a whole book written about them. That’s a rarity and says something about identity, awareness, and literacy in a way that certainly sets them apart. My advice? With about 750,000 books in print in the U.S., choose the ones that have something to offer you. And be grateful you have a heap of titles to browse.
